Aloha I am the great great granddaughter of Captain Thomas Gay, the great granddaughter of Eric James Gay, the granddaughter of Micheal Gay, and the daughter of Walter Gay. I grew up on the Big Island of Hawaii. I would like to share with the families of present Niihau, that my family has private documents, letters, and journals on our families history and I will boldly say that much of what I read about how Niihau was aqquired is VERY untrue.

Hi, my name is Doug and I'm living in Waimea for 11 months working at PMRF. Always wondered what the Island I see on the horizon every morning and evening was, now I know it's the jewel i thought it was. Very nice to see true Hawaiian traditions being preserved.

I found your site awhile ago on Google when studying about the Hawaiian Islands. I have been to Hawaii many times but never to Niihau. I wasn't aware that the owners of the island ran this site. I hear you are good people who have done a lot to help the native Hawaiians on Niihau. God Bless you for your work and support for these people! Lu-i http://www.Hawaii-Videos.net

My great-great grandfather was Captain Thomas Gay who at one time resided on the island of Ni'ihau. While growing up so many names were so familiar such as Sinclair, Robinson, Gay, Richardson and others but as an adult I know none of them. I stayed with Hawaiian relatives for a short time when young, but have to admit...it's all a mystery to me. For some reason, there seemed to be a sort of taboo about speaking of this side of the family. But, my grandfather Arthur Gay was one of the original Beach Boys, the surfers with the huge wood surfboards...for a look at Arthur with his custom surfboard go to www.ZaneDoe.com and check him out. Great photo of that era! Zane Shonforest from in New Mexico now

I spent a wonderful 10 days in Kauai with my husband on our 30th wedding anniversary. I have been dreaming of Hawaii all my life; then 26 years ago I did a past-life regression with a hypnotherapist and found that my most recent previous lifetime was as a young girl on NI'IHAU gathering seashells on the pristine shores which my mother then made into leis to be shipped to Kauai to be sold to the tourists! I was not even aware of NI'IHAU before. On March 22,2008, I looked out over the southwestern coast of Kauai, returning from our trip to Waimea Canyon, read the historic marker and I truly felt my heart leap with joy as I viewed "my" island only 18 miles away! I cried because I had the distinct impression that I had lived there and those were my native peoples. I quickly pulled into the Waimea Canyon General Store and bought a 19"lei Kipona and set of earrings to match. They are my prized possessions! Very soon I plan to "go home" on one of your helicopter tours. Who says you can't go home again?!
Suggestion: spell the island name NI'IHAU.

My wife and I visited Kauai for our 25th wedding anniversary. For such a simple beautiful Island I can't help but feel that there are REAL struggles that go on daily to try and maintain the Island and the natives lifestyles. Sure it sounds easy to say to the Robinson's give these people their land and their freedom, to me they have. They've given them something they would not be able to have any place else on earth, complete anonymity and a peaceful livestyle. The Robinson's have been the ones to secure these people that freedom, make no mistake if it were not for them paying the taxes, trying to keep the military not to mention the rest of the world at bay, there would be high rise timeshares all over the Island. I wish the natives of Niihau and the Robinson family all the best and my prayer is that they can keep this Shangrila as authentic and undisturbed as possible, but lets face it in todays world there will most likely have to be some concessions made.
